For the twelfth year running, W.A.Ellis put forward an elite team of ‘athletes' for the now hugely popular JP Morgan trot around Battersea Park. With temperatures at levels that could compete with the Marathon de Sables, the 23 strong team took any form of transport they could find to get south of the river....
The Performance Director (PD) is delighted to inform you all of various personal bests (pb) and personal worsts (pw) after a sun lit evening of sport. With both the men’s and women’s teams being bolstered by one or two late ringer call ups, meant WAE fielded their strongest line up ever. A notable entrant, coming out of a 25 year retirement of doing exercise, was Daniel Wiggin. He was the man everyone at WAE, including St Johns Ambulance, had come to watch. PBs were set in the younger age classes, with pws being set in the over 40s and 50s categories.
The squad then moved on to a ‘run down and stretch’ at the Prince of Wales, where the runners debriefed over suitable refreshments.
‘I was doing okay until the 2k mark, when I was forced to take a fag break’ said Women’s elite Martina Casey (pb), ‘after that pause for air, I got my second wind, and managed to keep going until the finishing straight before I needed another one’.
‘I knew I was struggling when I was overtaken by a human caterpillar, but I dug deep and took them at the 5k mark’ said James Wilson (pw).
‘I’ll tell you what, plenty of lycra clad totty taking part this evening, I just followed an attractive rear until I couldn’t keep up with it, and then waited for another to overtake me...’ said Jamie Burridge (pw).
The team then moved on to replace lost carbs at PE; Peter (pw) was responsible for the WAE team pb at a PE party by bringing enough vouchers to secure ‘promotional savings’ of £85.75; well done to Peter from all of the squad.
Having said that, these are austere times and PD is disappointed to note that one or two took the p..s when it came to choosing from the menu; typically whoever ordered extra ‘pine kernels’ owes PD £2.40, and the limoncello drinkers are to be reprimanded for excluding PD from the round.
Oh, and Daniel came 6th. We are all awaiting the blood tests.
As ever
PD
